I frown on the use of grease or similar products when installing Carbs, rubber grommets...etc. The grease tends to collect dirt so I use a dillution of dish soap in a spray bottle. But as with most things, to each their own.
I think they use the soapy water solution to put tires on rims... Slippery going on, but sticky after dry. I use the silicon spray because its real handy. I have a can of the stuff right in my tool box.

This is the tool I used to get the carbs on the manifolds. It allowed me to push the rubber boots from the inside to where they had to be. Once that was done, they went on.

I think mostly everyone here missed the problem. Its not about slipping in and out of the insulator. The insulators are angled and have to be aligned right in order for the carbs to even go in. There are two tabs on each side of the insulator. One lines up with the notch on the opening of the cylinder head and the other is supposed to line up with what the manual calls a "lug" on the carb body. My free downloaded manual has really bad pictures so I cant exactly tell what this lug is referring to.

Lube it up and crank it on but on rubber use rubber grease not petroleum grease. You'll dry out the rubber and they are expensive to replace.
