With the ignition on, flip the run/stop button back and fourth waitng aobut 3-4 seconds for each push of the switch. The fuel pump will pump each time the switch is in the run position. May have to do it about 10-15 times.

So then the fuel pump should be working the if the switcth is in the on postion with the key on and pushing the start button. But just so i under stand the pump only work's if the bike is running or by turn the on/off switch back and forth. So the pump work's every time the bike is turned to the on postion.

The fuel pump will pulse each time the the run/stop emergency switch is placed in the run position. You do not have to push the start button until after you have enough fuel in the carb bowls.

I cannot speak to the older bikes, but on the newer bikes (like my 2006 VT1100) the power to the fuel pump is controlled by a relay which is triggered by the cylinder #1 ignition pulse. After charging the battery, I was able to jumper the fuel pump. It ran for 7-10 cycles until it pressurized the line. I was then able to check the bowl drain for fuel. I did notice my battery charge dropped off very quickly. My lesson learned was that a low battery can cause problems with the fuel pump not triggering the fuel pump relay.

You can jump the pump relay. Take the seat off and you will see the relay on the left of the bike above the battery. It is a small square box with a 3 pin flat connector on it. Disconnect the connector and on the connector (not the relay itself) jump the Black to the Black/Blue wires at the terminal with a piece of wire or paper clip. Turn the ignition switch on and the pump should run.

Edit: this is for an 1100 ACE, but I would believe yours should be similar. Just follow the wires from the pump to find your relay.

+1 on what Fixjets says. On my bike, the two pump leads feed up to connectors underneath the seat as well. It's also easy to disconnect those two wires and jumper directly to the battery.
