i read inside my drum that the rear drum's max wear limit is 161 mm. anyone know what they were new? i'm having a hard time finding a used wheel that is better than the one i have now (mine is well over the 161 mm limit and the rear brake no longer engages)

Don’t know if its exactly the answer you were looking for but the Honda manual list the standard measurement and the limit @ 161.

thats interesting. i just got a new to me rear wheel, i cleaned out the surface rust inside the drum and with my digital caliper i'm getting about 159.5mm. so i guess this one should work for a while then? i dont know how long it takes to wear down 1.5mm of brake drum material.

It should last a lifetime unless you have sandpaper brake shoes, it is not properly adjusted or you ride with your foot on the pedal.
