I think there is some mix up on rights and lefts in this discussion. Push on left handle bar the bike goes left. That is counter steer, because you are turning the tire the opposite direction you want to go.

You Ace is similar to my Aero that I had. I didn't mind the rubber bushings on that much because it was a lazier bike. And in just daily riding I don't really notice it on the '86 either. But in harder leans and side to side flicks, especially on not so perfect pavement, the rubber isolators become very noticeable.

My bad, yes, push in the direction you want to go, yes a mix up.

Hondaline Billet Handlebar Clamp - This is an option. Works good for me. There are different makers of these. The only complaint I have is the one I purchased partially blocks my "indicator lights" view.

If you get movement of the bars relative to the triple clamp, I betcha the rubbers are worn or disintegrating because of age. My 25 year old VT1100 bars do not move independent of the triple clamps. If the rubber mounts are in good condition, normal riding will not have a "sloppy" feel - they are supposed to be stiff and dampen vibration, not cause "slop".

I say you just scrap the handlebars altogether and get yourself some clip ons!

I can't push mine back and forth a full inch(I don't think it's that much, haven't actually measured it), but that all depends on the handle distance to the rubber bushing. Those apes will increase the handlebar-to-bushing length and increase any slop. Weather your bushings are worn out or it's the way the bike is from the factory, it may get real annoying with the apes. What I would do is, leaving everything hooked up to your factory bars, unclamp them and move them foward out of the way, and just clamp in the new apes. Push them front to back and decide from there whether it's too much for how you ride.

"normal riding" on mine doesn't have a sloppy feel. Going over crappy pavement (i think my suspension maybe tuned stiff also) and in hard turns or quick side to side transitions they show their slop.

I did find a previous thread where someone used large washers and drilled out the centers to go around the inside metal piece of the bushing and allow the risers to clamp directly to the triple clamp. That's what I'm gonna do this weekend.
