Default Will I have to re-jet?

I am thinking about getting the Vance and Hines Straightshots. Will I have to re-jet if I leave the baffles in or do I have to re-jet no matter what?

Yes.

Honda spent a lot of time setting that engine up to run right with that particular exhaust and intake. When you make a major change to one or the other or both, you throw all that tuning out the window.

Your engine will still run as jetted, but it will most likely backfire and "pop" on deceleration. It will also most likely blue your nice shiny new pipes, regardless of thier shielding.

Spend the extra dollars and pick up a jet kit when you get your pipes.

I'd also recommend rejetting the bike if you pick up the V&H pipes. Didn't have any issues when I removed the baffles on the stock exhaust but, once I switched to V&H and modified the baffles, my bike eventually started to experience throttle lag on accel - need to jet it and, hope that I haven't burnt a valve in the mean time.

You may be able to get away with richening the mixture. I have done that in the past.

Got it. Thanks everyone. That is exactly what I needed to know. I will definitely re-jet when I get them to make sure and protect my investment and my bike. thanks again.

I lost some low end torque.
Makes for higher revving take off.
Just a little popping, not enought to bother me.
I do have a jet kit I need to get installed.
I suggest you will need one.

Some will say no, but I have to agree with this ^.
I would recommend to go one up on the pilot jet, makes a world of difference, and will take care of that decel pop. (the pilot jet does not come with most jet kits.)

I think you missunderstood. The aswer is MAYBE.

While. it is true that even a STOCK Shadow might benifit from rejetting. That does not mean that the change to the VH Pipes, will require jetting.

To REPHRASE.....

If AFTER changing the exhaust, and adjusting the Carbs, and riding for 1-2 weeks, you have AF Issues, then decide about rejetting. Post exhaust mod adjustments would include, idle, pilot screws and check sync (AIN).

Now, would I jet, YES. I would rejet a stock Shadow. in your case, I would use the Jet kit recommended by VH. It will be a DynoJet kit, so it you get the Kit#, you can order wherever you find the best price. You could save money by using OEM jets, but then you can't upgrade the needles. The needles themselves make the DJ kit worth any extra cash. Install the jets as per the instructions. Ride for a week or 2 and decide if I need to make further adjustments.

Note, OEM jets and OTHER manufacture jets are NOT numbered the same. So If you are planning to try the one-&-done $20 OEM rejet job. Do the cross referencing research. Example a OEM 165 jet is the same size as a DJ 150, but the DJ has a higher flow rate.

I'll share my experience. I put V & H Cruzers on my 08 Aero 750 (baffles in) and I lost power. It felt flat. I had to give it more throttle to go. The inner header pipe started turning a gold color. TOO LEAN.

I re-jetted, added a #52 slow jet (stock was a #50) and turned the pilot screw out 1/4 turn. The power was back and the inner header pipe stopped turning colors.

Good luck, C.W.
