i have just posted a pic of my bike. this is my 3rd post. i need to find out what may be wrong with my speedometer. the light doesnt work on it and it does not register speed or odometer. i took the cable off, it is not broken. i looked at the part that (i assume) is supposed to spin at the front wheel, and it is NOT spinning. i have only rolled it and put it in gear in a parking lot and did not get it up to any kind of speed. should it still spin? please help!?

Woth the cable disconnected at either end pull on the inner cable and see if it comes out in one piece. There shoudl be a fitting on both ends. It could also be a bad speed sensor on the wheel. There is a plastic gear that can easily break. As far as the light it could be the bulb, broken wire, bad connection or bad fuse.

There is a washer with tabs in the front wheel speedo drive "unit". It (or the gears) are broke. The light bulb is probably burnt out.
Have you downloaded manual yet?

thanks guys!! the cable did pull out in one peice, there was a "fitting" on one end(kinda like a straight head screw) that was on the end that goes to the front wheel. the other end of the cable is just squared..(the end that goes into the speedo).... but like i said the part on the wheel that fits into the cable and (i assume) should spin, does not appear to be spinning.. its a 99 shadow 1100 spirit.
so, 95shadow1099? how do i replace the washer or gears? and where do i get the manual? |

hook the cable back to your speedo, on the drive end chuck it up in a drill and give it a little spin and watch your needle. If it turns then you have narrowed the problem positively to the drive.

The manual MAY be here.....
Honda Service Manuals Not sure what year bike ya got. The speedo drive unit is held on with the axle. Remove axle, drop down the wheel (not necessarily off), just enough to access that drive and you will see that tabbed washer and how it fits in the back side of the "gearbox" lets call it. I've replace the cable on the Shadow 11k and V65. The tabbed washer ALSO was broke in half in the V65 (wheelies are good for that). Both/all parts in the system are pretty simple, no secrets or special tools needed. Raise the front wheel of the bike off the ground (jack). Remove phillips screw that holds cable to "gearbox" (near axle, left side on ALL of my rides) and pull cable out/off. See the flat "tab" (on the gearbox) that female side of cable goes into....? Rotate wheel, Does it turn? Yes? Don't use pliers, but can your fingers "stop" it from turning? If not, all down there is good....it's the cable or speedo itself..... I wouldn't use drill to spin cable. You/others can, I don't see the need to. H13Man has a very good point..... Let me know if I can be of any other help.... or explain my "rambling" descriptions. Try hard to get manual, it's priceless.
