You test it just the way I said. If there is a good ground, and a good connected power to the starter than that pretty much narrows it down. You need to use a multimeter. You can than remove the starter and try applying power, it will likely spin freely with no load on it anyway even if it is a bit off, but just clicking isn't a good thing and may manifest itself even if there is no load.

i took the solenoid to the dealer and paid 5 bucks to have it tested. they told me everything was good. how exactly do i test the starter? how do i put power to it? take a battery pack and ground it and touch the red to the part where the wire from the solenoid hooks to the starter?

edit: is it possible that the clutch is the issue? it hasnt been riden in a while and i feel like the clutch may not be fully engaged, causing the bike to not let itself start. would it click if that was the issue?

If you have taken your multimeter that you should be using and checked for voltage at the stud on your starter and checked for full voltage than you have effectively tested your starter.

If you dont trust your wireing than yes, you can simply take some jumper cables, red to red on the battery, and black on the black, connect the other black to the frame or better yet engine somewhere, and the other red to the pos stud on the starter. If it doesn't spin with a known good battery (this could also be your issue) than your starter needs pulled. Again...

well i actually wouldn't be surprised if it was the battery.. the lights and the front fan works when i turn the key but it has been dead for 4 months. it sat on the charger overnight but it could just be dead. i will have the battery tested first. then if thats okay then i will take the starter out and test that. where can i buy a new starter clutch in case i have to replace that?

Your really doing yourself a disservice by not using a multimeter.... Their very cheap. A dead battery should be something that you know right away.

You order the three rollers and three springs that make up your starter sprag. Look up an online microfiche of the charging system ( i believe )

battery tested at 12.2 i think is what he said. he wasn't real clear. and he said its not completely dead. he said the reader said needs to be recharged. but i just took it off the charger from leaving it on a 2 amp trickle for over 12 hours. so i should just go with a new battery?

where do i get a multimeter?

Where do you live? Sears, Canadian tire, Harbour freight, NAPA, just about anywhere really. Cheap ones are fine for all you going to be doing with it.

12.2 volts is low if it just came off charge, No load voltage isn't an accurate test of a batteries state, Checking the voltage under load is a bit more accurate if you dont have access to an electrolyte tester or load tester.

You may have 12.2 until you turn on the key, than it may be dropping off...

Just a click can be a few things. A bad battery, stuck starter, a bad start solenoid, dirty or loose connections in your battery/starter circuit, etc. Lots it could be.

You really need the multimeter before you can accurately narrow it down though.

Yes.

And the starter circuit is the section of wires and switches that make your starter work.

Electricity is a hard thing to see. A multimeter fixes that. Troubleshooting electrical snags without a multimeter or test light is next to impossible.

well like i said i've had my starter solenoid and battery tested. the solenoid is good. battery is most likely bad. while i'm at it i'm probably going to go ahead and do a full tune up.who knows when the last one was and it has 31,000 miles so a tune up will probably suit me well.

that is after i make sure it runs.
