Default Vt800 backfire and idle issues

Hi, I recently bought a 1988 vt800 and trying to do as much work as I can by myself. Trying to get it up and running again is issue after issue. First it would crank but not light so I took the carbs off careful as to not inadvertently "adjust" anything on them during removal. Sure enough the jets were clogged I cleaned them out and put everything back the way it was before. Now it starts fairly easily but the idle is to low to run on its own so I adjusted the idle screw but it tightens all the way up barely keeping the bike at idle. If I manually keep it going it works but it backfires very often at idle. I ran a bit of seafoam through to see if it would clear up but it didn't change anything. Everything to my knowledge is stock. Anyone know what I could do to fix it?
Thank you in advance for your help,

N

did you clean the pilot screw passages?
If not ,clean it ,turn them out to initial position suggested by manual(usual 2,1/4 to 2,5 turn out)
Change-clean the airfilter.check the carbbots for vacumleak with some startspray sprayin on the boots,if the rpm rise you found the problem.
Good luck

Thanks, I haven't touched the pilot screw passages. Il do that when I work on it tomorrow I do not have the manual but I think that the process has been mentioned on another thread. The boots are actually not stock as I found out a couple hours ago. I guess the previous owner noticed the boots were dry rotted and they could buy new ones so used they seemed to have used tight fitting fuel filler neck hose. They seemed to be ok as far as I could tell.
Thanks

Alright so I checked the pilot screws on was a little blocked but not too bad. I noticed that the hose that goes down between the carbs was a little cracked. Could that be whats causing some of the issue?
