I use simple green, let it soak for 10 minutes or more then hit it with the hose, what doesn't come off gets simple green again, soak, wipe with a rag, rinse and done. Engine degreasers can etch aluminum leaving it chalky looking.

+1 on the Simple Green. If you a cheap ******* like me then just mix up some Dawn or Palmolive, spray down a lukewarm motor with water, then hit it with the Dish soap, and rinse. What doesn't come clean will likely take a bit of elbow grease. I find that old dirty microfibers work great.
