After my oil change went seriously wrong: An Oil Change Gone Seriously Wrong!
there is a "ticking" sound coming from the right side of the crankcase on my 2007 Spirit VT750C2. I've uploaded a video here: VT750C2 Ticking.MOV - YouTube The predominant, and higher pitched, sound in the video is the ticking I am talking about, exhaust is in the background with lower tones. I'm currently living in Norway and dealership service is beyond outrageous here (for comparison gas is around $11/gal) and I'd like to figure this out and take care of it myself if at all possible. Anyone have any ideas, comments, thoughts, or suggestions? |

I'd start by taking the cover off and looking at what's inside there. Maybe a piece of something floating around... sorry

The sound (click, tick, chatter) does not change with the clutch engaged/disengaged although it seems to increase/decrease in tempo with engine rpm increase/decrease.
I've had the crankcase open five times since the original incident. Oil changed, magnetic drainplug installed, and all of the gears, chain links, and other moving parts that are visible show no degrading, abuse, or wear at all for that matter. I've also sent a PM to Maverick750 to see what their thoughts are. Last edited by Spectrum124; 03-30-2012 at 02:38 PM. |

Unfortunately Spectrum124, that is the same kind of noise I was hearing, and like you I had my crankcase apart/back together several times hoping to find a loose bit of metal or something (anything!) obvious to avoid randomly replacing parts. Alas, everything seemed to be in perfect condition but the noise persisted.
I finally bit the bullet and replaced the clutch basket and primary drive gear (as several threads here suggested I would) and the noise immediately stopped. All I can think is that the specs on that basket are too tight for damage to be obvious, and that the dipstick is (despite getting as chewed up as an Amity Island tourist in the process) hard enough to throw that hard-ass basket out of whack. I'm betting if you replace those two items the noise will stop. It's a gamble, but I it has been the right move for several people on this forum in similar circumstances. By now you can probably work around that crankcase blindfolded anyway. I'm sorry this happened to you. Honda should implement a sleeve in that dipstick slot or something to keep the little b!tch away from the moving parts. It's just too easy (and too costly) to forget to screw it in, especially considering how often one checks/changes the oil. Good luck!
