well, today i put almost half a quart of oil in my bike after purchasing it 1500 miles ago in order to bring it back up to the fill level. is this something to be worried about? i havent noticed any significant oil drippage from under the bike.

Put around 5k on mine since I bought it with out having to add oil but I have changed it twice. My first thought is did you check the oil per the manual? Mine says to let it run at least 5 minutes and then off for 2-3 and then check with bike upright and level.

If you check it while it's on the kickstand, you won't get an accurate reading. You'll end up overfilling and causing more problems.
Stand the bike upright.

^This. Also, don't wait another 1500 miles before you check it again. I check my oil level once a week, although I usually ride a minimum of 250-300 miles per week.

Checking the oil while sitting on it and holding it upright is a little awkward, but doable. I usually unscrew the dip stick before I climb aboard and set it upright. I find that makes it a little easier to then remove, wipe, stick and read.
