Default a question for those more knowlegable then i

i recently purchased a 98 shadow aero. i was told it has a after market pipe and a cam kit in it but after further research i think the "aftermarket" pipe is just the original with all the baffles cut out as its loud and the pipe is hollow all the way through.

so im starting to wonder about that "camshaft" upgrade as well. is there any way to find out what is in there or if its stock or not, short of tearing the whole bike down?

im inclined to belive that the bike has some modifications to it as it will haul ass for a big cruiser IMO as im new to cruisers and came from a super sport bike but to me 40mph in 1st and hitting 120mph+ with two up is pretty good to me. is that about stock or what?

You came from a super sport bike and think an Aero hauls ass? What was your sport bike? Anyway, there is no way to tell what cam is there without teardown. Most performance tuners would do airflow, carb, exhaust, ignition before cam so that may be one way to tell. Stock the bike could go 40 in 1st but rpm would be zinging. And 40 mph in 1st suggests cam lift has not been reduced. 120 mph is unusual as top speed is between 95 and 110 depending on model and mods.

I've never met anyone who came the SS world and was impressed by cruiser!

Anyway, to my knowledge, no one made an aftermarket cam for that bike, so I think you were fed a line by the PO.

A Stock Aero 1100 should be able to hit 120 indicated but with speedo error it's down to about 108.

Post pics to confirm on the pipes. Have never heard of any aftermarket cams for the VT1100. Top speed for a stock Aero is 105. Indicated speed will vary depending on your speedos accuracy. most are 10-20mph off at that speed. FWIW, My 93 has been radar clocked at 135 and by Garmin at 150, But I have about $5000 worth of motor work.
What kind of SS bike would leave you impressed by a Shadows performance numbers???? I might agree, with a seat of the pants comparison but not with a numbers based comparison. I have the same seat of the pants opinion My old 83 VF1100C Magna. The Magna was miles faster, but in the seat did feel slower than the Shadow. The Magna was much smother under accel, which can feel slow. But in the time it takes the Shadow to get to 100 my Mag would be doing about 150

Don't want to hijack thread too badly but I am curious as to what gearing (or ring and pinion ) you have done to get 150 and how that affects the power band in low and middle gears. I have considered changing ratios but even with V&H and Dynojet, I worry the engine will not support a bigger gear set.

i had a 05 gsxr 750. it was not stock and would haul ass. and im not saying its faster or such then my old bike just for a 1000lb v twin bike that supposidly has around 50hp(about 1/3 of my old bike) it moves pretty good for what it is. just curious if theres any truth to what the PO said. im thinking its a lie though. but i dont really have a way to confirm that. thanks for the help guys
