So i got my new old 1984 Shadow vt700, and took off the tank and seats to empty the gas tank (had old gas, probably) and I checked the coolant and oil, bla bla bla, all that stuff, anyway
When I went to put ti all back together I noticed that the little lockable container on the back of the passenger backrest no longer locked. The key turned like normal, but the latch was not "lathching" onto anything. There is hole in the metal cross member it is supposed to latch onto, is there an insert or something that is supposed to be in that hole? The manual doesnt show one and the repair manual i bought doesnt show one. What am i missing? |

Once you push the tool-box / container back into its seat at the bottom of the sissy-bar... it should line-up and latch into the hole in the upper-cross-bar of the sissy bar... right between where the back-seat bolts in.
Make sure you have everything lined up correctly, and it should "pop" right in and latch.

Thats what I thought. I wonder if i somehow moved the bottom metal holding bracket? It is able to swing some. Is it adjustable up and down? The tool box goes all the way in place. I tried to seat it in place with out the back seat on so I could see what was going on, but havent figured it out... The latch moves in and out with the key and seems not to be impinged on anything. The metal latch faces up and latches onto the metal bracket that the seat is bolted to, correct?

Yes, that bracket shouldn't move, and if the seat lines up and bolts go through their holes correctly, then it hasn't moved.
I know mine has been in a bind before and not seated fully or correctly, causing the latch to not fully engage the hole at the upper bracket... usually a good whack with the palm of my hand will seat / latch it. My guess is that it is not going flush enough with the bracket up top, which could be caused by the lower bracket not allowing movement (it pivots from vertical to leaning out so you can remove the tool box). Try a bit of WD-40 on the lower bracket to free it up, or see if anything is preventing it from moving freely. |
