At least you are honest. So, you are going to change your own oil, but want to rely on the forum to tell you what to use? Seems a bit ironic to me.....
I use GN4 (20w-50) from the Honda dealer and a Fram 6607 from Advance Auto. The crowd is going to tell you to use Rotella from Wal-Mart. And before the crowing starts, I paid less for the GN4 from the Honda dealer than I did for Valvoline 5w-20 from Advance for my Toyota pickup. The GN4 was about $4.50 a quart and the Valvoline was about $5.25.

How many Quarts do I need? A little over 3? Which filter should I get? I want to order online. The Honda dealer is kind of far from me could I buy a filter and oil from pretty much any dealer? There is a Suzuki deal near me.

Motorcycle Oil Filter Cross Reference Edit: I just realized they may not have updated the chart to specifically list the Phantom. Someone might want to chime in if they know for sure which category the Phantom filter would fall into. I'm thinking 5.

Here's a site that shows the dissection of several oil filters, including Fram. Then you can make up your mind on the merits of Fram. Motorcycle Oil Filter Comparison

Motorcycle Oil Filter Cross Reference BTW... I am running Rotella T6 and have a SuperTech ST6607 filter. Based on that website, and from reading various comments by others, some have ran into a few issues with the longer filters, but nothing serious. Just makes for a very very tight space. Sample of some short filters Super Tech ST6607 (if you can still find them at WalMart). Purolator Pure One PL14612 K&N KN-204 Bosch 3300 To the original poster: Honda Shadows normally take 2.75 quarts of oil (w/ filter change).
