OK I just changed my plugs about 2 weeks ago got maybe 50 miles on them and I take them out and there black like chalk now everyone says I'm running lean so I took it and had the carbs ripped off and cleaned and had the bike rejetted twice in 4 mths. and it's still doing it.after about 2 weeks of riding(maybe 100 miles) the plugs are so black the bike won't even start.what else could it be.

1st - black sooty plugs, is an indication of a rich fuel mixture.
who did the jetting?
did they rejet it based on the info you gave them, that its running lean?
if so then you may have went richer than you were.
a rich condition can be caused by the jetting, a fuel enrichme not seating properly, incorrect float height, or a float valve not seating due to dirt or contamination.

do you have any mods to the intake or exhuast?

Black plugs are a RICH mixture bud. You're most likely going to need someone to re-jet them again. (Or re-jet yourself, its not brain surgery you can do it.)

Assuming though, that your carbs have JUST recently been cleaned, you're probably running too large 'a jet. (Jets)

I hate to state the obvious but I just spent 1/2 hour trying to undo a saildrive drain screw the wrong way (looking up the hull from the bottom turning clockwise). Anyway here goes: do you have the correct plugs? What shape were your old plugs? Gap?

Black plugs = running rich.
Tan plugs = OK.
White plugs = running lean.

Probably ok, but just in case, you may also want to check that you have the correct plugs (heat range) for your bike.

This is not a simple sparkplug problem..so let's try to find out what it is..

If you removed the carbs yourself then took them to the shop and told the shop it was running lean they would have jetted with bigger jets to make it run rich..TWICE..

when the carbs were cleaned did they fit a new repair kit in each one..

Someone not familier with carbs may not have removed the pilot jet o'rings before fitting the new ones, this would have caused incorrect setting..they might not have examined the diaphragms for pinholes or splits, and they may not have stripped and cleaned the air cutoff valves, also they may not have got the vacuum diaphragm seated correctly and the cover on without splitting it..I always use a smear of silicon gasket gel in the channel to hold it in it's seat..

John.
