As opposed to doing the whole hole saw mod, would it hurt to just drill through one baffle, or resonator, or otherwise just remove it from one pipe and leave the other one in?
I would like it a little bit louder, but I don't want to annoy neighbors or have to yell at someone when talking next to the bike. Sent from my Motorcycle iPad app |

Dont remove just one.
if you can, drill holes to the outside of the baffle where it sticks out the pipe. one hole in each pipe. should give you a little more of what your looking for.

Do you or a friend have an air compressor and a air die grinder? Used my die grinder and 1/2" round carbide bit to reach up inside each baffle and ground a 1/2" hole in the side of each baffle close to the end. Little bit louder but not much. Ground two more holes in each baffle. Sound was nice with three 1/2" holes inside each baffle. Went ahead and ground a 4th hole in each baffle (1/2" hole every 90 degrees with side opposite holes a little deeper in then the other 2 inside the end of each baffle). Wouldn't want it any louder then what it is with the 4 holes, actually liked it better with 3 holes.

Yeah, You CAN drill just one...
Drill one and see if you like the sound, it`ll be unbalanced though... My Bike now has stock exhaust, and That is plenty loud fer me without drilling holes in it... I bought this exhaust after several years of riding with straight pipes... My neighbors thank me too, "D"

I replaced the stock exhaust with a set of the Double D's shorty drag pipes soon after purchasing my 2000 VT1100 Shadow. The Double D's are straight-through pipes with a larger outer shell to hide the heat bruising and give them a bigger appearance (Double D's) as you'll see in my picture album. I also don't particularly care for the obnoxious loud pipe sound, so I experimented with baffle combinations to achieve a rather unique and tolerable tone you may like to try. I bought some of the 4 inch baffle inserts which resemble a piece of flared tubing that was symmetrically punctured by an old church key can opener. This type of baffle only gives a slight decrease in noise level and/or exhaust pressure flow when used alone. I actually piggy-backed 2 to 3 of them into each pipe to muffle the sound down to a gentle 'puff' at idle, and nearly mild muffler tone at cruising speeds. Then, I came up with the perfect tone I was looking for by putting 2 baffles into the short rear pipe, and one baffle into the longer front pipe. This doesn't give the effect of the 'dead cylinder' sound mentioned in a previous message I read in your inquiry here. But it does resemble a nice harmonic lope at idle and cruising speeds. And again, the back pressure issue is negligible due to the shorter pipe being double baffled. Perhaps I'll try and finagle a recording of it into a media stream or sorts as a demonstration. Hope this info was helpful.

Hmm thanks all.
I may just need to find someone who removed their baffles to see what it sounds like for real. I don't think I would care too much for loud straight throughs. Sent from my Motorcycle iPad app |
