How long does it take to replace the clutch with a clutch kit and new cable?
I got one estimate from a shop and it seemed long to me. 3.5 to 4 hours was what one shop told me.

It could take that long if you drain the oil change the filter, time to clean the gasket and fit a new one, but it does sound like they might be padding it a bit, or maybe they are unfamilier with your bike...I would try to find a shop that does quite a few of them so they can do it efficiently..
or if you can't...just have a new cable fitted and adjusted and change the rest next time. John.

Many shops use flat rate billing. There is a big book that says how long each job takes and thats what you pay whether it takes that long or not. Sometimes they win sometimes they lose but you always pay the same.
It took me 4 hours to do a thorough job of replacing the clutch on my VT1100T. I am a 25 year mechanic. Mind you I cleaned everything and inspected everything and was VERY thorough. At a shop you are looking at about 2-3 hours

ok ya'll ease my mind on this, as it's my long time shop that does what I can't or don't have the Skills/tools to do. Yes I have a service manual, but so I hear did the guys that built the Leaning Tower of Piza.

Yeah I just replaced mine yesterday and it took me about an hour and a half to get the old plates out and the new one in with oil and all. However it took me another 2 hours at least trying to dial in the cable and lever off the clutch panel. Keep getting either too much friction to disengage or full disengagement but a slipping clutch. My cable is just a bit too long. Got it now where its like 95% engaged and doesn't slip, but doesn't accelerate as fast as it should.

Old firm that you have dealt with for years, work up to now has been reliable..ask if they drain the oil and change the filter in that time, then agree the full price before they start work..and you have a fair deal..
John.
