Default idles rough then dies with gas?

1996 vt1100c2 a.c.e. always a good runner. Started normal the other day, then going down the road it started to sputter, now it will idle rough, but any throttle and it dies. I've checked all the obvious, main and reserve tank do the same thing, changed the plugs, new fuel filter, removed the air filter. Any suggestions before I "call the man"?

may i offer a simple solution to try before tearing the carbs down - I have been using this stuff ever since I started riding motorcycles - 96 suzuki 650 and now the 03 VT750 - both had rough running issues when i got them had been setting a while in both cases - after 5 tanks of premium and Seafoam (2oz/gal) the 03 is now running fine - $9 @ walmart or any parts store IMO well worth a shot...p.s. my buddy got his 03 Ford Tribute back from his wife when she got a new vehicle - he said t was idling rough and had poor pick up...he remmebered me talking about Seafoam and dumped a whole can in the gas tank - by the time he had to fill it back up it was no longer idling rough and the pick up was back to normal.....

All of these things are possibilities, check for tank vent problems as well, see if you hear a rush of air when opening tank,if so check for kinking or clog of vent hose on bottom of tank
