Guys, Need a little help. On a '95 1100 spirit is the stator attached to the cover or bolted to the case? I'm looking at buying another one (bike) that the current owner has already replaced the regulator on. What is the correct way to test the stator. According to him it charges fine at idle but won't charge when accelerated. How bad of a job to replace? Ideas? TIA

It's attached to the engine side cover. The job isn't too hard, I did mine last year. Replace the gaskets when you do it. Here's mine:

Search this tech forum for charging voltage issues, you'll find links to electrosport troubleshooting guides, then lots of people will offer up help with any questions you run in to. I changed mine on my 2000 sabre recently, sometimes you'll notice higher volts at idle than as you rev up higher,it's a fairly normal situation. If you do end up replacing it yourself, take your time and observe details like how the rubber grommets that hold the wires in place on the cover are installed, make sure if the dowel pins come off attached to the cover you pull them and put them on the case to aid in gasket installation, just a couple things I learned the hard way

It is a fairly easy job, but cleaning the old gasket off is honestly the hardest, most time-consuming part of the job. I recently did mine, and it took about 5-hrs from gathering tools to ready-to-ride.
I'll impart some lessons learned... hopefully they will help you: Lessons learned...
