I got my license on Sunday... and already managed to drop my bike. Luckily I had the crash bar installed which saved my bike from more damage and my foot as well. I was going into a series of turns and underestimated my speed. I made a mistake by pushing a brake and ended up laying the bike on its left side and sliding into a curb with it. Hitting a curb, ultimately broke the bottom welding of the crashbar. The top left portion of the bar had been mounted to the left part of the frame. I guess after the impact the bracket holding the top of the bar cut into the frame. So right now it looks like somebody chiseled a little notch on the frame (I'll post photos later on today when I get home from work). I was able to drive the bike back home after removing the damaged left side of the crash bar.
My concern is that notch on the frame from the mounting bracket. I would like you guys to tell me if anyone had experience with that and how bad the damage really is. I'm planning on putting exactly the same crash bar instead of the damaged one. I want to be sure that it's Ok to do so. Oh, and I got four stiches on my leg, and some minor road rash (I had been wearing gloves, jacket and a full face helmet). The jacket's left arm is shredded, but it protected my arm. Bad luck, but now you have christened your first bike, and you have walked (limped) away you have joined the club..I have fallen of quite a few bikes over the years..
Don't let it put you off riding, you must have fallen off a few pedal bikes when you were a kid.. John.

I would get that frame damage checked by a competent and honest (they do exist) mechanic. Bike frames have a lot of stress on them. A notch in the frame will concentrate stress forces and may eventually cause a crack, which can cause failure, most likely when you least want it.
As stated previously, get it ground so there aren't any sharp points to the damage, welded, ground smooth and then painted. I don't think I would ride a bike with a damaged frame. At least not very hard and not very far. |

sorry to hear you crashed, but now it out of the way, do you have insurance on your bike? if so let a shop check it out and do the repairs, don't recomment welding on the frame, unless you know what your doing it can weaken it.

Even experienced riders drop their bikes. Sometimes it is just a little sand or gravel in a turn that you couldn't see until you were committed to the turn. The rookie year though is the most hazardous. I think after taking the Basic Rider MSF course they give you a false confidence in your ability. I am not saying their course is not good, because I think what they teach is very valuable. But some people get a false confidence in their ability because of their closed course work, it isn't always the same on the street.
Glad you came out OK and make sure you get the bike checked out. I only had some plastic damage and smashed the radiator when I dropped my last bike. No accident report and no insurance claim. I just ordered my parts and fixed it, and not even a scratch on me but it did bruise my ego and my hip that hit the ground.
