Down shifting to a stop is a good idea. If for any reason you need to accelerate quickly, you're already in the correct gear.

I had a chain come off on a `72-CB 750, it weren`t pretty!!!
You were extrememely blessed when it came off!!! (and shouldda or should thank Him)
Ain`t you got a Motorcycle Owners Manual???? (MOM)
Detailed Chain maintenance and adjustment is in the book, NO extra Stand required...
I too have started lubing the contact points of chain and sprockets as well as the chain lube, to see if I can get more miles outta these EXPENSIVE components...
