The left hand grip on my 83 Shadow keeps slipping down while riding. It will get down like an inch and I push it back up and after awhile it slips back down. What's the best way to keep this from happening? Do I need to replace the grip or can I just put some super glue in it? Is there some special rubber to steel epoxy and do I need to scuff the steel first?
I know this should be an easy thing to figure out but thought I would bounce it off you guys first. You seem to have "been there, done that" with just about every issue possible on these bikes. |

You can use spray adhesive, aerosol hair spray etc. Spray it inside the grip, not a ton, just a good coating. Then push the grip back on, no need to prep the bar. Let it sit for a while before you try 'checking' it.
BUT, if the grip is slipping off that easy it may have stretched enough to where it won't fit snug. If that is the case, time for new grips.

They make special grip-adhesives, but for the factory, foam-grips, jimnfor is right... any spray adhesive will do well... and so will common rubber-cement. Superglue will be a pain to clean up if you ever decide to upgrade grips. The spray adhesives and rubber-based adhesives are much easier to deal with after-the-fact.

I put on cheap grips from Ebay, and they fit like CRAP! I glued them on and they never stuck. I ordered the "real" ones from the Honda dealership and took the old ones off and they fit AMAZING!
ie dont get the cheap crap! |

Hair spray works perfectly.

You have probably gotten some water under the handgrip...
Next time it starts moving bring it all the way off and dry the handlebar and the inside of the grip, then reinstall it... It`ll prolly stay put once you do that, Don`t cost nothing to try it, "D"

I had that problem for a year or so after I changed the handlebar. I tried half a dozen different suggestions and a few ideas of my own. Most worked okay until the weather got hot and (sometimes or) I parked the bike in the sun. I tried two different grip glues with no success. (Yes, I cleaned out the inside of the grip very carefully before each application.)
The problem finally disappeared when I got grip glue from a Harley shop. Guess they only stock the good stuff when it comes to repairs.

When I changed the bars on mine I used grip tape on them. Not the stuff for sports handles but the really rough stuff for steps. One strip lengthwise and hammered the grip on. Fits very tight.
