Hey everybody!! I've been wanting to change out my intake for a while, but I really don't want to shell out $200-$300 to get something. I found a "K&N" style air cleaner (about 6 inches round and 4 inches tall) at a auto parts store with a 3 inch inlet. I measured the carb on the bike and it's around 2 inches. I guess my questions are: If I can mate up the two (using a reducer or something to that effect) will an air cleaner designed for a car, work on a 750 shadow? And if so, will I need to re-jet the carb? Or am I barking up the wrong tree all together and just save up my money to buy something specifically designed for my bike (2008 Spirit)?
Thanks All!! |

An air filter whether for a car or bike functions the same, so the answer is Yes it will work.
The only difference in Air Filter design is the size of dirt it will allow through. As for jet change, if you haven't change the exhaust to aftermarket, well probably not, as it should keep approximately the same A/F ratio. But remember they are usually set on the lean side from the factory (for emissions), so it wouldn't hurt to re-jet for better performance and you'll probably get a bit better fuel economy when set correctly.

Great, thank you for the input. The bike had aftermarket pipes on it when I bought it, so I'm not sure about the jetting as it is. But it runs great, so I'm guessing the previous owner did it right. I'll try out the filter and go from there. If it doesn't quite run right, I'll look into the jets. I'd almost rather fabricate something of my own, like rigging up this intake. I don't know squat about mechaniccs, but if I can take something off, I can usually replace it with a mod of some sort.
Again, thanks for the advice. |

if you are replacing the airbox, you will need to jet it.

Just do some research on what jets people are going with, for the intake you will be using, you have a 750?

Yes, 2008 750. It had V&H Short Shots on it when I bought it 2 years ago. I don't know if it has already been jetted or not. But I'm certainly not opposed to getting a kit and doing it for the exhaust and intake. From what I can tell (and I may be completely wrong) the different stages of jet kits depend on what you have done. So would exhaust and intake need a Stage 3 kit?

when you know what you will be dong with the intake call dynojet, and order an entire selection of mains, they're only 2.00 each, 9.00 shipping. this way you'll be prepared if you need to make further changes to the mains. the pilots you can get from a dealer or jetsrus.com but before you uy a jet kit on order anything, you will need to take a look at the needles to see if they are adjustable.

I'll open it up and see what needles are in there. I don't think the pipes have baffles. Not to sound like an idiot, but they look empty inside. I had to take the front pipe off when I put on forward controls, and it was really light. I don't know if that is any way to tell. But, it's like 103 degrees outside and I have no shade to work in. So I'll probably tackle this in the next week or so once the weather cools down. I think it's gonna be in the 90s this week, woohoo!! And how do I know if it needs new jets? Will it just not run right with the new intake? I know if I start it up with the box off, it dies it I give it any gas. Am I looking at that kind of thing with the wrong jets?

may have a little sputter at very light throttle, may bog all together with a little more throttle, intake pop on acceloration - like a backfire, when I removed the baffles on the wife VLX, no real problems at all, a little spudder just off closed throttle, took care of that with a pilot jet, and then didnt like the plug reads, so I shimmed the needle and went up a couple sizes on the main. so even though there may not be a noticable problem, it may still be running leaner than you would want it too.
