Default Dyno Jet Needle question

...2005 Honda VT750 Shadow Aero....single 35mm bore carb.....need to set the needle on the 2nd groove from bottom but the plastic needle retainer won't let me do that because the needle is too long....question....is it wise to trim the top of the needle off to accomodate this position? has anyone done this with good results????

I have the KN jet kit and the directions say that cutting the needle off at 1 of the grooves may be necessary to obtain clearance.
