Default 83 vt500c shifter question

I'm very new to riding and have only rode about 100 miles so far. I'm having a little problem with shifting because I can barely get my boot under the shifter since it's so stubby. It's to short to reach the middle of my boot, it just catches the edge of my big toe which is a little frustrating. Is there any way the make it longer?

There is no adjustment to make it longer, you can adjust it up and down, but the only way to make it longer would be to cut it and weld a piece of flat bar or something in there

I was hoping maybe there was a replacement after market shifter someone might know of. Are all bikes the same, except the ones with forward controls?

No they are not all the same. If you adjust the shifter up you should be able to get your boot under it comfortably.

I will try adjusting it up. It may also be my boots. They are really nice, but the bottom tread sticks out the sides about a 1/4 inch.
