Exclamation HELP:Battery/Charging issue

Like a dingbat, I left my key in the bike yesterday for a couple of hours. I realized it and come outside. The bike obviously was dead as a doornail. I got a jump, and the bike was idling ok. I went to take off, and the bike just died.

I put in a new battery this morning, $76 later, and the turn signals and headlight work, but the bike will not even try to crank over.

Did I break the stator, or something else? I need advice on how to fix my dumb mistake.

First off how long did you charge your new battery. Leave it charging with a battery tender overnight. Of you had no previous starting problems this might be a simple fix.

I got a brand new one from Batteries Plus. I went back and had them double check the new one, and they said it had a full charge. They do have my old one still too. They are leaving it on a charger overnight, and I will swing by this morning to try that one back out in my bike.

I know this might be silly to even mention, but I've done it and many other people have. Make sure your kill switch is on the "run" position... Make sure you're not preventing your machine from starting(Mine won't start if it's in gear and the kickstand is down). Try holding the clutch in and starting it to make sure it isn't that safety going weird... Not sure what else it could be as far as simple checks.

You were right. I left the bike in 1st when it conked out on me. I put it in neutral, and it fired up.

Someone with photoshop skills, feel free to give me the dumbarse of the day award.

Reminds of when I first got my Rebel... It didn't have the safety feature with the kickstand or anything, but I left it in the "off" position and tried starting it, killing my own battery. Fun times.
