i bought a stebel air horn for my volusia, and while i was at it i bought one for the vt700. has anyone with an 83-85 style vt700 installed one of these on their bikes? my horn finally died last night on my way to bike night, i started running lengths of wire tonight to start hooking up the relay but i'm having a hard time finding a suitable spot to mount the horn. has anyone done this on this particular model?

I have no idea what the VT700 looks like, but I have a VT750 and had a VT1100 and mounted the same horn using a U-bolt around the forward frame, near the top, where the radiator mounts. Put a 3/4" bar across the U-bolt - the bar extends back about 1". Through this drill a 1/4" hole, suitable for the horn mounting bolt, and the horn mounts snub up next to the head, about 1/2" away.
If you send me your e-mail, I can send some close-up photos. You can see it in the photo below, with the crash bars, just splitting the horn in half. I got the one with chrome cover for the VT750, though on the VT1100 I had the all black one. Bill .

i think i found where it will work. it wont be pretty, but i'd rather be heard. i'm making a bracket for it right now and starting to run the wires for it. theres not a ton of room on this bike to run wires and mount a relay etc...

I slammed one of those dual tone "train horns" from Sebel on my Ninja 250 years ago. waiting for honda to replace my lemon before I install another one on my phantom. I usually bolted it to the top part of the radiator mount, under the head (tripple clamp) for the forks. It got kinda close to the fender and tire, and inhaled ALOT of road crap, but my problem with my install was getting a good ground and installing the relay.
My relay failed twice (water damage? ), and I was under the bike fixing a bad ground about once a month. Make sure you get good connections on all your wiring. I also ran my wires UNDER the tank down the middle, back to the battery. It was a pretty clean install, couldn't see anything, but sure could hear it! The horn saved my life MANY times. Ill never ride without one! |
