Just lightly knock off the sharp edge if needed. I would recommend doing them one at a time so you always have one to compare to. They have to be correctly oriented and there is only one right way.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the actual orientation I should be going for when lining the diaphragm with the cylinder? I don't see any real indicators that I should be looking for but you made it sound pretty specific when it comes to setting the diaphragm up right

The slide has a flat and a hole in the bottom that has to point a specific way and the diaphragm has the little nub on the outer ring that fits into the carb body, all this must be line up correctly.
That's why I recommend doing them one at a time so you always have one to compare to.

Update time!

Sorry it's been a while since I had a post with substance, I've had cold feet :/ too many possibilities to make an error and I freeze up.

First thing is I pulled the battery and passed it along to a friend to see if he can trickle it. Dire financial straights means I can't afford one of my own, so hopefully the battery is fine, just in need of juice.

Second, bit the bullet and unplugged the pilots. Holy crap. May have found the root of the problem. Carb A: 5 1/8th turns out. Carb B: seated. Yep. No lie. Soaking the screws and reinstalling to 3 1/2 each, going from there.

Lastly, manned up and glued the replacement diaphragm in place. Praying to god o got it right. Looks pretty close either way. Going to clean other side of the carbs and reassemble when I'm done. Pics will follow!

Um... Awfully late to ask this but... When attaching the diaphragm, should it look like an umbrella or a martini glass before compressing the diaphragm into the shaft? I'm afraid I may have installed it upside down?

Has anyone seen someone try to mod a 84 vt700 or similar bike to look anything like the oldschool panheads or anything? I'm looking for a crossbreed of the Indiana jones bike and captain Americas. I found a pic where someone "cloned" the Indy bike with a Kawasaki, just curious if the old Indian/triumph look has been tried with our particular breed of beasts?
