So i bought the bike it runs but cuts out when revved, it engages all gears and the bike runs in a fashion it is smooth on tickover.
with the help of a few chaps on here i have ruled out the fuel pump so i looked to the carbs i bought some spray carb cleaner and when sprayed into the air intake at the same time as adding throttle it revved freely no carb cleaner it cuts out when revved. so took the carbs off by heating the manifolds with the wifes hair dryer and got them off had the bowls off and all the jets look fine and clean. I then noticed what looked like a repair upon further investigation it looked like someone had by drilling or attempting to drill out the plug cap to the pilot screws made a mess and caved in the wall hence the repair. the other side is fine and has the screw intact the repaired side when i looked inside had only the spring which i have now taken out. would this explain my problems so far ??? |

You need a cheap £1 shop dental pick..there is a very small o'ring in that hole and also a very small washer that is easy to lose..The o'ring is part of the VT700 carb repair kit that you can get from bitzforbikes Ltd phone No 01706 344899 which costs £9.13 plus vat plus p&p..the kit does not include the washer or the diaphragm and as you have two carbs you will need two kits part No 220510 total cost for both kits £23.34...take lots of photos as you strip the carbs so that you know where everything goes.. google honda VT700 1986 fiche for a parts list..
John.

Just look up the parts fiche for the 84 and the 86 to see if they are the same number..
Having said that the carb bodies may be the same so you may be able to swap the damaged body. I have an 84 and an 86 and almost nothing fits from one to the other.. John.

Thanks for the info, so it looks like i definatley do need new carbs would prefer some new ones contacted a dealer in America and it work out at 370 pounds for a new pair delivered does this sound reasonable hell of a lot of money but i intend to keep the shadow, the alternative is buying a second had pair but these from breakers yards in the states reach 3 - 400 dollars.
Any advice on what course of action to take would appreciated Thanks Craig from a not so sunny England |
