The overflow tank is near ground level. There is an open air drain hose on it. Coolant mixing starts at each warm up.

Keep in mind that there are only 2 systems that are completely sealed, the clutch and brake systems. They have systems that allow no air to enter them, so water cannot get in either. Everything else will expand and contract with temperature, so they have vent holes.
