Default leak at clutch slave-86 vt1100 (repost from general discussion)

I traced this leak to the lower bolt area of the clutch slave on my 86 vt1100. The gasket doesn't look terrible but I guess I;ll replace it but is it going to be that simple to cure?

That gasket is made of a plastic material and may break or crack. If it does, oil leaks out from the crack.

This is a picture of the gasket:

A new one costs 5 USD.
Just take the bolts out, pull the outter casing. There's a piston inside the casing, that is pressed out by a spring. If the piston oring is in good condition, the piston may not pop out, which would be a good thing.
Now put the new gasket in and then the outter casing back to its original position. Don't overtight the bolts to avoid cracking the gasket again.

Here is the shop manual drawing (i'm not affiliated with CMSNL):
Number 7 is the gasket part # 22862-MB0-000
Number 10 is the piston Oring.

the gasket (#7) looks ok but I think the #23 is worn out a bit...I ordered a kit for like $17 bucks that has most of those parts and my repair book has a pretty good description on how to do it so I may go for it, or maybe just try replacing #23 and see if that fixes the leak...thanks for the diagram!

Default same (maybe) issue on my 86 VT700

I have similar leak. Everyone pointed to replacing the oil seals / gaskets in the clutch slave cylinder. Apparently this has helped many.

It was very simple fix except, after replacing, my oil kept leaking. I became convinced it was from somewhere else ...anyway, other forum member mentioned a oil seal around the push rod INSIDE the left crank case. This, I believe is most likely my issue of similar area oil leak.

I just started to remove crank case bolts tonight (and left footpeg and shifter to get to bottom case crankcase bolts) and will continue over weekend. Hopefully this is going to be my fix and won't get in over my head (the fix seems fairly easy but never been inside cc before).

So just letting you know if you replace those seals, and still have same oil leak, it could be clutch push rod oil seal inside the crank case. You could confirm leaking from around the push rod into the slave cylinder which was what I found out.

Best

i have a 96 Honda Shadow that had a oil leak that i thought was coming from the clutch slave. The culprit was the push rod seal inside the block. Very easy to change. The gasket that goes on the clutch slave does not keep oil from leaking out, it is only a heat shield. good luck.

That makes sense. The oil seal is indeed part #23

Since you have to take off the outside cover and buy a new gasket anyhow. Go ahead and change the clutch push rod seal....$4 i think. I was so sure that it was the #7 seal too, and it ended up being the push rod seal right behind it. Your going to have to order seal #2, go ahead and check out the other seals. you dont want to have to tear this seal in the event that you have to go back in there....its easy...just do what you can while your in there......have fun.

just another note that might help....make sure you pay attention to how those seals come out.....put them in just the way they come out....another lesson i learned...

That big gasket pointed out at the start of the post is just a spacer so that the piston pushes the clutch rod in the right distance. Your leak can only be coming from the piston seal itself if it is hydraulic fluid. That is actually an easy fix and I just got done doing it myself. Now if you are seeing oil....thats a little different...but still not so terrible....but may require more work. No. 10 in the drawing is for the clutch hydraulic fluid, No. 23 is for the oil and both are easy to replace.....bleeding the air from the clutch after the rebuild is the hardest thing to do there.....the other oil seal is around the clutch rod on the inside and it will require removing the cover and replacing the seal along with the cover gaskets.....I did not have to do that.....and you should make sure that you dont have to either before you set out in that direction.....identify the leak by replacing the easy stuff first.

I may have missed it while I sped through the replies.....but have you definately said whether it was motor oil or hydraulic fluid?
