Default Carbs cleaned and Synced... still popping

Hello everyone.
The bike is an 86 VT700C with about 56K on the odometer.

I had the baffles out for awhile, and I put about 5k on it like that. I got tired of the carb issues - so I replaced the exhaust with the MAC exhaust that claimed it did not need to be jetted.

There was a lot of backfiring with the MAC exhaust, so I brought the bike to a guy I trust - who cleaned the carbs, and even shimmed out the needles a little to make it run right. The bike idles great, sounds great, has plenty of acceleration, just pops very badly when in gear and deceleration. If I rev it in neutral - it is fine. Just when in gear. The guy also synced the carbs (again - I trust this gentleman and he uses the proper tools to do everything).

So I am at a loss, it may be set a little lean? Not sure where to even start on this... but the popping is loud and annoying.

Thanks again!

It sounds like the idle screws are set too lean. Each one should be turned out a bit to richen the idle mixture...

Yup. Clean and synch all you want, if you don't enrich* the air/fuel mixture you won't get rid of the popping.

* Moving to Denver -- or a higher altitude -- might do the trick. But I think turning the screws out is a little less of a challenge.

Thanks. Hypothetically - if I knew nothing about motorcycle mechanics, and never really worked on a carb before, how would I do that? I know I found a guide here before... but I am having trouble finding it once again. Can someone help a newbie out? Thanks in advance.
