Default 1986 vt500c: Final Drive Breather Keeps Running Off!

I am really confused about the final drive breather on my VT500c When I first bought the bike, the breather could have been there.. i'm not sure. Once i noticed it was missing, i ordered and "installed" another.... which has, now, gone missing. I now have a new one waiting to go one the bike but i want it to stick around.

Did i install it incorrectly? I gave it a few light taps with a hammer. should i bang the new one in?

Any advice helps.

Beating on it probably won't help. Something like this looks like a good application for JB Weld. Maybe give that a try?

It is a breather cap.. JB Weld will seal it up and cause too much pressure in the final drive in theory.

Yeah, you're right about that! I was thinking that the breather came as an assembly that gets tapped into the aluminum gear housing. . . .

Maybe, maybe not?

What I did was clean the underside of the cap really well rough up three small spots spaced evenly around the inside of the cap and place three small dots of silicon on the roughed up areas let it dry until just past tacky then put the cap on the bike. Mine stayed on even when the bike got rearended.
