Alright, I'm on page 22 and while I've found a lot of '86 Shadow owners, I haven't found anyone with this problem yet..
I cannot for the life of me get this damn airbox to settle right on the carbs. Anyone got any tips or tricks to make this happen easier? At this point, I'm contemplating just getting some sturdy flexible hose, some PVC and ghetto rigging a side filter like single carb bikes run. But will this screw up the air intake and require new jetting/tuning? I bought this bike a year ago, and had to swap the engine case because of a crack, lack of funds/knowledge made this process take a whole year and the only thing stopping me now is putting this filter back on, putting the tank on and putting fluids in.

I've had my airbox off several times..everytime I put it back on it a pain in the ass...I just keep turning and fiddeling with it till they eventually pop onto the carbs...I have used seafoam spray (or another spray lube) to help the carbs slide into the rubber boots...good luck...

Silicone spray or grease helps. Also, buying new carb rubbers helps a lot! They get cooked and very hard over time which makes the whole process much more difficult.
You can get new carb rubbers here: INSULATOR, CARB - Search : 16211-MG8-000

They don't have little boots as near as I can tell. It's hard to see from this angle but they just connect directly to the carb-tops..
