No matter the bike, I do what I know how to do; what I don't, I leave to the dealer.
Works for me. Sent from my iPhone using Motorcycle.com App

Having been a mechanic for 25 years I do 95% myself. The other 5% requires special tooling that I don't have so I have a local mechanic with a shop do the work. He is better than ANY dealer out there. He is honest and will tell you when something doesnt need doing. He is ALWAYS busy but will make time for a quicky job if you need it done fast. To top it off he works hourly and not flat rate so the price is better than the dealer.
One thing I did notice here in Canada... Parts are cheaper at the dealer than going online to Bike bandit etc. because shipping drives the price up.

Just because someone went through certification doesn't make them qualified. The mechanics I got to work on my machine "for a simple OIL change" at the dealer in my town cross-threaded my oil cap back on >_>. I had to buy a new one. Never letting them touch my stuff again, I look for motorcycle repair shops (mom and pop style) now. Generally, I just do the work myself, but it goes to Porzio Performance if it's above me.

I feel really fortunate. My local dealer has qualified people in the shop, they stock lots of parts, and the prices are quite reasonable. They're friendly so I know most of the folks in the dealership by name and they know mine. I can schedule a maintenance for a specific time, show up and "shop" for new bikes while I wait.

Although as mentioned I do most my own work for convenience, those that take bikes to a dealer or indie can ask the mechanic what certifications they hold. Here we have a Red Seal program that is a very high level of training and years experience and I have found them very competent. G. |
