Default Fuel Filter Installation? '84 Shadow

I recently tore my induction system and carbs off the bike to solve some stumbling problems that I was having. I think I found the problem (4X4 hole cut in airbox right under gas tank) and have fixed it.

I cleaned the tank out as well since there was a bit of rust in it. It is all clean and pretty now . I have a Pingel petcock, which has a wire mesh screen over the valve holes and I am sure this prevented alot of the big rust flakes from working their way into my carbs.

Should I install an additional fuel filter? And if so, where should I put it? The fuel line splits after an inch or two from the petcock to the carbs and there really isn't enough room to install a filter directly inline. I would have to stuff some extra fuel line in in order to have room for the filter.

Any ideas/suggestions?

I have an inline fuel filter after the petcock and pump...I assumed it was stock. Anyways? After I shook my tank clean and what not, I went through 2 of them before it stayed relatively clean due to the rust.

Well, i had one installed on my bike when i bought it, it is after the pump, before it gets to the carbs.

I had a fair bit of rust, and got tired of fighting it so i removed both tanks and went thru the process of sealing them. I added line and replaced the fuel filter. I added enuf line that I can just pull the line out and get to the fuel filter without having to remove anything or fight confined spaces. Of course, since then i have had no reason to get to the fuel filter...BUT WHEN I DO, i will be glad of the ease with which i CAN get to the fuel filter....lol
