There's only 1 place all these problems can happen thats in the cylinder. If your blowing white or blue smoke it's all happening in your cylinder. If you have gas in your oil its happening in the cylinder. All these problems indicate a blown head gasket or rings or valve seals depending which one or combination of is happening. Could be a crack some where too. So you need to clear up what you see then we can help you. The not starting might be low compression again in the cylinder. Doing a compression test will eleminate or confirm that.

What ever you do, do one thing at a time. If you try to fix to many things at once and it goes south you wont know what cause the problem to get worse.
If you blew a head gasket you would know it. Blue or white smoke constantly. At idle and while cruising. If there is water in the oil or vis versa the dip stick would look like mud and or you coolant tank would look the same. Im sorry I dont have any ideas as to where to start other than back track your steps when it went south and began to run like crap. Start at that point.

Ok so I did a compression test with a cold engine. Does it have to be at normal running temp. to expose a leak? Front was 160 psi rear was 150 psi. No drop in pressure over a period of 5 minutes in either cylinder.
Hmm, now what? Should I still do a leak down test?

Found this on another forum...
"97' adventurer stops running after reaching running temp. When starting for the 1st time after overnight sit the bike starts first hit of starter button and runs normal until running temp is reached then shuts off like turning off the key switch, at this time the motor will crank but will not start. After a timely wait of ten minute or so it will start, run normal then die out, running time is shorter than the first. It appears the bike has to cool down to get it started again.This is my 1st major problem with the bike it has been very dependable since new. In the forum I've read about the coils but not much about the igniter or igniter pick up. When going bad what kind of problems will they cause? The igniter or (computer i was told by the triumph dealer )cost $700 with tax, thats very pricey for such a small board. Anyway any input is appreciated.......Today was the first chance to work on the bike. The ignition pick up was bad. The measured resistance was perfect until motor was at running temperature then the circuit opened shutting off the motor. I was lucky the dealer had one in stock for 59.95 and the gasket for 5.99. Its back to business as usual. Thanks to the guys who replied." This might be the problem I am having...
