Yes. You'll have to remove the fuel tank.
Make sure it is empty before you do it because the petcock is only after the reserve tank, the small tank under the seat.
You could try to siphon the fuel out of there. Do you know how to do that?
Just in case, here is a nice video:
The main fuel tank has two line attached to it. One, the thicker one, is the fuel transfer line, that will allow fuel to pass to the reserve tank. The other, the thiner one, is the vent line of the reserve tank. Just pull them out from the reserve tank side.
Only fill the gas tank in the end, after you install it back on the bike, with all the fuel lines attached.
I can't remember of any wires needing to be disconnected, except, perhaps the battery wires, which you must disconnect for safety reasons.

Do you have someone helping you with this project?

Don't worry, there's no astronaut stuff in there. I'm not a mechanic but I'll help you as much as I can.
Now go and get those carbs out.
Did you managed to remove the seat nut?

The biggest things about working on any vehicle are- have the right tools, have a good manuel, be patient because your going to hit a few road blocks even a good mechanic does. If your fuel system is dirty it may take a few carb cleans/rebuilds and system flushes befor you get it cleared. I have the whole carb removal-clean-install down to under an hour, lol.

Hey 83 just a word of wisdom, make sure to bag everything you take out an label it! Each carb is different so do one side at a time and keep it all separate! I'm finishing up my first rebuild as well In the thread The Long Road, with lots of pictures, did it all step by step. A lot of guys have given me tips and help as well, so you may find some answers on there. Above all, if you can't figure it out, ask for help! The guys (and gals) on here are a great tool and wealth of knowledge!
