Change the oil while it's hot.

Those coils tend to crack due to rust on the inside. Mine is cracked and if I let water get near it, a spark flies from the crack to the cylinder head. A new coil is expensive and a used one could be as bad as those you have. Remember: all those bikes parts are 30 years old too.
Just stick to the carburettors for now. If that is all that you need to get the bike running, no point in spending money.

Yeah. Wash it and let it dry. Then soak it in air filter oil. It must be oily before you can use it.

Change the oil according to what is written in the shop manual I sent you.
Not rocket science but you have to do it right or you could damage the engine.

Man, I loved my '83 Shadow 750. Most (99%) of the time, she was just a powerful beast and a joy to ride. The other 1% was when she was frigging impossible to start. Had to get the choke just right every time, and she stranded me a few times by failing to start up before the battery quit. I got her cheap (EBay) and kept her for years, so she didn't owe me a dime; but the solution to my problems was to sell the damned thing.

i understand but the thing is i don't know what is specifically causing the bike to not start every time and back fire so I'm trying to do as much maintenance as possible. i just received my spark plugs so i going to do that once i clean and repair the carbs. thanks again for everything man
