the longest I've rode on this bike was half a block because once i came to a stop it shutoff. that was a few weeks ago sometimes this bike will run and sometime it won't crank at all. i keep the battery inside to charge for when i feel like trying to find the true problem. today i went out to the bike put in the fully charged battery and attempted to start it , it took about 5-8 min of pushing start a few times then shutting of nd etc until it finally cranked after that i put the choke up a lil to warm it up since the last time i tried to pull off after starting right away the bike shut off as soon as i released the clutch ... so after i put the choke up and put it down a couple times and out of nowhere the bike started revving out of control and the was no way i was to go into first gear in that situation so i cut off the engine. the same thing happened twice and after that the bike didnt start again and the battery was pretty drained.
IM VERY FRUSTRATED IVE HAD THIS BIKE FOR A MONTH AND I STILL CANT GET THIS BIKE TO RUN CONSISTENTLY. I WILL LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I SHOULD AND SHOULDNT DO .. SHOULD I TAKE IT TO A SHOP ALTHOUGH IM ON A BUDGET , OR SHOULD I CHANGE THE PLUGS AND KEEP GOING FROM THERE ANY ADVICE WILL BE HELPFUL, THANKS AND HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING , PEACE |

Choke will cause bike to idle high. If it started with no choke it probably didn't need it.
Hanging or surging idle also points to air leak between carbs and motor. 1983 points to needing the carbs cleaned. Dead battery points to blown voltage regulator, stator, or bad connection between stator, vr and battery. Plugs will probably not help. Are the pipes and filter stock? |

That is a 30 years old bike. It needs some care and attention.
The bike is very simple and doesn't have any tricks up her sleeve. Like a sick dog, if she doesn't want to go, no point in tugging her along. I tell you that it is simple from my own experience. I'm not a mechanic and still managed to take one just like that apart and fix her real good. With that said, what you need to do at this point is to pull those carburaters out and give them a good cleaning. Even if that is not the problem, it should bee your first step. Of course first you should try the easy stuff like replacing the spark plugs and the air filter. To do that, first get the shop manual from the sticky. It is very good in helping you to remove stuff like that. If you can't find it let us know. If you decide to have a go at the carburaters, first get the tool box on the back seat out, get both seats out, empty the fuel tank and get it out, remove the black snorkel on top of the carburaters and finally remove both carburaters out. Do not separate the carburaters! Get a repair kit on the net that will include all the gaskets and a small filter. Pull up your sleeves and come back here for more help. Good luck. |

Check the operation of the kickstand cutoff switch, if it has one. For the bolt, you can dremel a flathead slot into it. Failing that, the seat bolt should be long enough to shave the head off, and back it out with vice grips.

Quote:
If it is the front seat, do the following: 1 - Spray a bit of penetrating oil and let it there for a while (1 hour) 2 - Protect the seat with a cover to avoid damaging it and use a heat gun to heat the nut for a while (until it's too hot to touch). 3 - Use a vise grip on the nut and turn it anti-clockwise. It should come off. |
