OK I got the final parts to seal my crankcase and fire her up again! Even though I had to work very late tonight (got home 11pm here in the U.S.) I'm going to stay up as late as I have to in order to get it back together.
crossing my fingers that I can get the crankcase cover on that bent spindle... Also I realized that I never disconnected my battery. I'm a safety guy and if there's any type of hazard I'll do what's necessary to avoid it. seats remove, battery disconnected until I get the engine back together TY for all the help and advise. |

I has a sad
The shifter is bent just a tad, tad bit too far for me to get the cover back on. If I had a way to bend it even just a quarter of an inch back, I'd be able to get it back on. Unless anyone has some kind of method for bending this back a tiny bit without breaking it or removing it, I'm stuck until I can pull the engine out of the frame. darn. |

That's bad luck, man.
I guess you could use a torch to heat up the metal in order to bent it just a bit, but that might be damage the aluminum crankcase. So unless one of the resident gurus have an idea for you, you are pretty much stuck. Here is a wild idea: cut the shaft, straighten it up, weld it back on. LAter, when you which to replace it, cut it back again, just behind the weld and remove it. To straighten it, use a hydraulic press, or heat it up with a torch and use your Thor hammer once more. For the welding, you might have to remove the fly wheel.

Unfortunately I don't think any of those options will work Luis - although all of those fixes may work with a skilled mechanic/welder, I am afraid my inexperience will lead me to damaging the engine casing if I try to cut/weld or even try the torch to heating it up. I do have a replacement shaft (bought it on e-bay, it came with the entire linkage as a set) so I think honestly my best option is to take the right crankcase off, bite the bullet and pull it.
I just have two problems with doing that: removing the engine from the frame, and not having a replacement gasket. I've seen a trick on youtube to make a makeshift gasket out of a cereal box + some liquid gasket sealant from the auto parts store, so that solves that problem. The major one is not having any equipment to aid me in pulling that big 150 lb motor out by myself. can I support the engine in the frame safely with a jack and just jack it up an inch after removing the bolts? edit: I think it's time to shop for an engine stand. good thing it's my day off and I just got paid yesterday >< Last edited by proto; 12-01-2012 at 11:30 AM. |

How about this:
Hoist the bike from the ceiling and use a wheeled board and some foam boards to get under the engine. That's all I used. You can do it by yourself but it is best to get someone else to help you. |

I haven't read the entire thread, but to replace the left side spindle (spindle A in the manual) the cover, flywheel/ starter clutch and guide plug would need to be removed for access. For spindle B, the clutch, oil pipe, pump chain, etc. has to be removed. Are you changing both spindles?

hmm so all I need to do is remove the flywheel and starter gear and I should be able to swap that out? gosh if that is all I had to do...*facepalm* On page 167 of the manual, when it talks about the 'external shift mechanism', I was under the impression I would have to get to it from the right side, behind the clutch housing and oil chain etc... With a puller. That stuff if pressed real hard in there. Not even Thor could pull that one out with his hammer
Anything else will damage the flywheel. Use the right tool for this one. The hammer for the rest. Perhaps Mattyo has an idea for you. Try to PM him. |
