Default found the problem with my '84 vt700c, how do I drain this?

I pulled off one of the fuel lines to the carb and whats coming out doesn't smell like gas. The tank itself has fresh gas in it but I think the part it connects to with the two hoses is full of something that needs to be emptied, how do I drain it? It doesn't smell like oil, not sure what it is but it needs to go.

I had a thought, can I bypass that canister that the fuel lines run to from the tank by running fuel line directly to the fuel pump? and what is the larger hose coming out of the gas tank do, can it be blocked off?

You're bike has two tanks, The main tank is the one on top and there is a subtank under the seat and the large line goes between the 2 tanks.

You have two lines going from the top tank to the reserve tank, one is the main line the gas flows thru, and the other is a vent tube

From the reserve tank under your seat there is a line that goes to the fuel pump and the line from there goes to the carbs. If I remember right, the fuel filter is between the reserve tank and fuel filter, Mine has been modified and the filter is between the pump and carbs...

If your bike has been sitting at all you likely have rust in one or both of the tanks. I would not be excited about passing the fuel filter...

Ok, it looks like I'm going to have to remove the reserve tank to drain and clean it since I don't see any other way of draining it.

It's not hard to pull the reserve - looks like it is, but it's not. Remove rear wheel, remove seat, disconnect the fuel lines, remove the 2 bolts on the top, and it just slips up and out with a little wiggling.

If all you want is to drain the tanks, just pull the fuel line under the reserve tank, and both tanks will drain from there. I'm not sure if you can reach it without having to remove any parts though.

Or if you just want to drain the tank and are not worried about rust, just undo the fuel line where it goes into the "T" that goes to the carbs. Put the line in a container for the bad gas and turn the key on (not turn over the engine) and you will here the fuel pump "click" repeatedly and pump out the gas much quicker then just gravity draining...
