So I've spent some time researching the MOSFET r/r and went out and bought it from Roadstercycle.com. I have a couple of ideas on where to mount it but I'm looking for advice on the best place to remount the r/r to allow it to get air.
My 1st choice is somewhere under the frame but I've read that some showed concern putting it in a vulnerable position to road hazards. My 2nd choice somewhere towards the front end by the radiator. But I can't find a place up there that I like the end result looks. I've looked at mounting to the plastic fender on the back but that would put it in harms way if I hit a deep pothole, not uncommon in the Chicago area. I have a crash bar and I'm thinking of making a thick aluminum plate to mount it to and then figuring out how to mount the plate to the crash bar. I know a lot of riders here have replaced their r/r and I'm just looking for some guidance on how they made it work on their bike. Also, if I mount it to the side panel on the left side, would the r/r get too hot that it would burn my leg if I hit it while sitting in traffic? Just wondering if that would work and then I wouldn't have to add wire to the kit. Last edited by dluszcz; 12-09-2012 at 10:12 AM. Reason: Added info |

Well I mounted mine in the stock location. Yours won't fit there??? Stock for ine is, Under the motor, between the trans, swing arm and fender. Out if site out of mind. If you get rid of the T battery? You could mount it in the battery box?

Stock location may work if I move it out an inch or so from the side panel and fab up a bracket to clear the side panel.
I also thought about up front on the left side frame cover. I already have a new battery that isn't a t style and it is just too wide or long to fit. I'm going to remove the plastic and see how I can make it fit in there. To me, that's the ideal location and I won't have to add more wire to the kit. |

Hey dluszcz would you post a pic of your crash bar and let us know where you got it? I recently obtained an engine case guard for my 86 1100 but its far from the type of protection im looking for from a regular full crash bar.
Ive seen a few new ones for 87 1100s but never for an 86 and I have no clue if one for an 87 would fit the 86s frame. Last edited by BlueFordTruck; 12-13-2012 at 10:50 AM. |

BlueFordTruck, I will post pics when I get a chance. As for the origin of the bars, they came off a parts bike I just bought 2 weeks ago.
I have been successful in relocating the r/r to the crash bar. But now I have a different problem, I can only get the new r/r up to 14v when I'm at 4000rpms. Now this could be because it is too cold outside and I may not have let it warm up enough but I was able to get it to run with the choke completely open so it had to be warmed up pretty good. While my idle is still low, I definitely notice a difference in the neutral light and headlight not dimming as they did with the OEM r/r. Any ideas on if I just need to let the r/r get acclimated to my bike or if I have a wiring issue. |

14v is good. Mine tops out at 14.2(if my gauge is right) and mine also runs lower volts at idle. I think your good to ride. I run a 85/80w headlight bulb and it is a lot brighter with my MOSFET r/r, it really lights up the road
