I have a 2001 shadow ace and it is not starting for some reason. When I turn the key, the electronics power up. When I go to push the ignition, I hear a "click" and then everything shuts off (All the electronics). I pulled the battery out, checked it, charged it but it turned out to be fine.
I have looked at the wires underneath and its obvious the previous owner seemed to not have paid too much attention to them. Any insight will be awesome. I'll post pictures in the next comment Sent from my iPhone using Motorcycle.com Free App |

Have you any way to try to jump start the bike?
I cannot say anything about the condition of the wires (they all just look really soiled to me) or their use but your description definitely sounds like too few working cells in a battery or a corroded connection somewhere. |

Are you talking about the connector with the three yellow wires? If so there should be a sticky in the tech forum about a 3 yellow wire fix and its a common problem I think.

Check this link. If has good info on what is most likely your problem. The start buttons on these bikes is a weak point. The link will show you how to fix it.
Starter Button Maintenance on Valkyries By the way the electronics going out when you push the start button is normal. It is done so most of the power goes to the starter for a better start. |

Picture 5 shows a rubber boot or cover, if you lift that and slide it inside out you will find a plug with four wires in it, two of the wires will be heated up and shorted together, separate all four wires with a screwdriver and squirt some silicon rubber sealant between the four wires to hold them apart and then form a block with the silicon to keep them apart while riding.
The other plug with the three yellow wires should be separated and if the plug or socket is discolored you need to cut the wires back and join them with solder making sure to insulate them from each other, heat shrink sleeve is the best thing for this.. John.

This is an exact description of what happened to me last month. I had my bike on a battery tender that glowed GREEN indicating it was fine, when, in fact, it had a dead cell. I went through all the troubleshooting, checking the relay/switches for my kickstand, neutral light, etc that would kill a bike, only to find that it was a dead cell when I took the battery to a friend who insisted that I check everything starting with the most obvious.
The battery couldn't handle the load of the starter, but could show the lights when it reset itself AFTER the "click." If your bike goes completely dead, then miraculously, has lights a moment or so later, I sure would take that battery out and have it tested. Then, if it tests good, start looking at other possibilities. If you are testing the battery at home, make sure that you test it under the load of the starter and not just sitting still. Good luck. |
