Default VLX Air Filter replacement

What's a good replacement air filter for a 2002 vlx 600?

I make my own using the oem filter frame. Take off the metal plate,(save to put back), cut out the paper pleated filter. Buy the store brand car air filter that has the same size paper pleating. Get some gasket seal(in tube). Cut the new paper filter to fit the oem filter frame and use the gasket seal to seat and seal the edges. Now take the metal plate and some small sheet metal screw and reattach the metal plate.

Has worked for me for over 50,000 miles. Cost about $11.00 for the car filter and few bucks for the gasket sealer. It beats spending $60.00 or more for the oem filter of which I once bought.(this gives me one on the bike and one refabbed for immediate replacement when needed)

Great idea. But is there a performance air filter for these bikes? Not that I'm going to get much more performance, but I'm wanting to change the pipes and air filter to see what that does.

$60 for an air filter? Yikes!

Steve, for sure if you change up the air flow you will need to put in a jet kit. Anytime you play with the air flow you will need to do this or at least adjust the a/f screw.
Keep in mind the vlx has 34 hp, just changing the pipes and air filter really won't do a whole lot towards performance. You will get a little more with the 4* timing mod, plus pipes, plus jet kit.

Do you have instructions on the timing mod or is this something I can google?

you have two ignitionpick ups on that, so they will have to be advanced properly together.

There is not an aftermarket air filter that I'm aware of for the 99 and newer VLXs.

I got a VLX K&N for $41 on Amazon. Works fine. Mostly got it because it's rechargeable, not for any supposed performance benefit.
