Default No Tach. How to Determine Factory 1100rpm Idle

Can you just listen to the motor and see if you are in the ballpark?

Can anybody give an example of the engine/exhaust sound at factory idle.

Or can you use a multimeter to get voltage at the battery? 14v-14.5 volts should be about right at idle?

Goto an AutoZone or an Oreilly's. Any place that rents tools, really. And rent an inductive timing light with tachometer function. Or buy one.

Depending on the tools settings, you may have to trick the tool or halve the reading since these bikes have a wasted spark.

This is what I did at first.

And then I bought a Tiny Tach. $49. Love it. Includes an hour meter too.

I adjust mine to a point where it sounds too low when it's cold and too high when it's warmed up. A happy medium.

I adjusted mine by listening to a whine the engine makes. Always adjust when the bike is warmed up. It will idle a little low till its warmed up.

Rent / buy a tach or go by ear. I do it buy ear, matching it by sound to my Cars idle, and then tweaking it. When tuning buy ear ignore, the exhaust sounds, only listen to the mechanical sounds. Or adjust it to where it sounds right when the motor is HOT. My bike has chokes/enrichers to adjust for idle speed, cold.
