I am in the middle of replacing the stator and R/R and noticed that the washer on the gear shift spindle is out of round. It appears as though it left small gouges on the flywheel. I assume that this is when it deformed the washer.
What holds the washer in place? Does the left crankcase cover hold that washer (#23) and circlip (#26) in place?
I have not had mine apart yet but the manual shows the circlip going on first from the outside and then the washer. The washer would sit against the case and keep the shaft from moving outward. But why the washer is deformed is strange. Was somebody in there before and put another washer on after they lost the correct one ???
Or the washer was put on first and moved back far enough to hit the flywheel.
Somebody had been in there before I bought it. I'll post pics this evening of the washer and flywheel. Circlip and washer were in the correct FSM order when I removed the CC cover.
It sure looks to me like those marks are from a chisel being hit with a hammer to try to get the flywheel off at some previous repair.
Otherwise they would be all around the circumference of the flywheel, if it was hitting the washer.
And the washer may be a spring washer to hold a little tension on the shaft to keep it from moving .
I have not seen the one on my bike but it sure looks that way, and may be normal.
If the washer was on the outside and the circlip was tight in it's groove, what else did you find in there that would be in that position to make pressure marks like that?
There was nothing else in there. The washer has to be the cause of the gouges in the cover and flywheel. The washer fits perfectly in the flywheel markings. There is also a small gouge on the spindle.
I bought a "new" side cover since the one I removed had a crack and a poor repair job. The crack was in the dry section of the cover where the oil pressure and neutral switches are located. Hopefully the "new" cover will hold the washer in the correct position against the circlip.
Maybe the guy was trying to get it to go back on and had the washer out of place and beat the crap out of it and prying on it caused all those marks, and cracked the cover. Hope all goes well now.
