05 Aero 750...I went for a short ride last night, stopped to visit a friend and when I went to start my bike as soon as I hit the start button I lost all power. I checked all the fuses including the main fuse, battery terminals tight and clean, all connectors under seat were tight.
I jumped started off car....did not have car running...started right up but still had no power, headlight dim, no horn or turn signals or odometer.
getting ready to take start switch apart...am I heading in the right direction??? any input would be awesome
Before doing the start button, pull the battery and have it load tested (it has to be fully charged). In my years as a truck mechanic I have seen several batteries lose connection internally. While the battery is out, clean the cable ends with sand paper or wire brush. Looking clean does not mean they are clean enough for a good connection.
Get a multi meter to test current and you should be able to find where the bad connection is.
Sounds like a loose connection up front that is moving with the handle bars or suspension . If it is running now try to twist and wiggle all the wiring up front and see if something changes. Tap on the fuse box with your hand and the dash panel too. Wiggle the battery connections also.
update....voltmeter was reading 12.8 until I turned key then dropped to nearly nothing...pulled battery out put on charger said it was fully charged....took it to parts store to test and VOILA....battery junk...kinda of sucks cause it was new this season. I'm hoping that the batterywas the issue and not something else....thanx all
If you killed a new battery, you'd better check your stator and voltage regulator. Pay attention to the plug for the 3 yellow wires. It can get burnt from a bad connection.
If it were the start switch, when you push in the button, you'd usually get the lights going out, but no start and nothing else. How do I know? I had one wire come off mine, which I managed to fix with a 'bandaid'!! It was the only thing I had to hold the wire to the switch, but it worked! Allowed me to get the bike running so I could get home from a 2-hour ride to the Fire & Ice rally. On mine, one wire just 'popped' loose from the switch, and once I soldered it back on, it's been working fine since. I supposed, though, if a different wire came loose, your dim lights might happen, but I don't think you'd have 'no power'. If that were happening to my bike, I'd be looking for a 'short' in the electricals somewhere, possibly inside the headlight bucket, since that's where many of the connections are.
