Hey so picked up a bike today for cheap and finally got it to start sounds like it has a tick or knock it's about 59* not sure if it's 85 has or 91 so don't know if it could be that.
Here's a video.
I don't know if the VT500 uses a fuel pump, but my 750 does, and the thing has a tick that is so loud I really thought it was an engine problem (I've ordered a new one).
If you just got it running, make sure you have the right oil in the bike. How many miles? Perhaps check and adjust the valves to take that out of the equation.
No fuel pump in the 500's from what I understand.
Ya just got it, going to change all the fluids today if time permits. Has just over 10,000 I think I'll double check here in a little bit.
Where can I find the valve clearance spec?
Not having a manual for the 500, i'm not sure what the specs are. Check the stickys at the top of the tech section for a free downloadable manual. With only 10,000 miles I wouldn't think there would be excessive wear yet. I'd make sure I had the proper oil in it before I got too excited about potential problems. You've got it running, so you've made it over the first hurdle.
Change ALL fluids and filters first.
Noise could be valves. Clearance is the same for intake & exhaust 0.10 mm (0.004 in.).
This could be the first oil change in 32 years and you may have a bit of built up moisture.
All of these old bikes "tick" a little when cold. Goes away when warmed up.
Have fun with it
I have the same bike. The 500's do not have a fuel pump, it's vacuum. Mine has a tick, and from my understanding they all do a little. It was worse but I adjusted my valves and that helped a some. Here is a screen shot of the process.
Ya I got the down load thank you. Started draining stuff today hope to finish tommarrow. I'm excited to have a nice fun project just hope to have it going before season is over here.
Is there a list of nut and bolt sizes anywhere I need a few for stuff po took off and mis placed. Such as rear storage above brake light and the nuts for batery holder and voltage reg.
Also it's leaking coolant at the water pump cover is it probably just a gasket or do water pumps on these have weep holes like cars when the pump goes bad.
Another thing found a random wire that is red hooked it up to the battery and the fan turned on where is that suppose to be hooked up to?
Not sure about the water pump sorry. I am currently diagnosing my cooling fan at the moment. I don't recall a red wire, I believe they are black and the other is black/blue? I haven't look in awhile. But there is a short wire that goes from the fan to the thermo switch near the bottom of the radiator, that's the ground. Then the positive wire runs from the fan, up the right side of the radiator (while sitting on it) and has a bullet connector at the radiator fill cap. Then from there goes under the gas tank in to the main wire harness, then up to the headlight where there it has a red(?) plug and from there goes to the fuse block.
Alright got everything drained and changed except for plugs and air filter waiting on those to come in the mail.
The radiator fan is hooked up to a switch next to the engine kill switch. So I figured how to get that working for now.
But I still have a coolant leak it's coming from in between the water pump and water pump cover so I'm going to buy a new gasket or o-ring for that but my question is can I get the cover off with the engine in the frame?
