I am rebuilding my carbs on my 97 VT1100C, and found tears in the diaphragm of both vacuum pistons (see pic). This part (16111-MAA-A00) is $80 for a new one. Is there a way to repair these diaphragms, or am I gonna have to shell out $160? Is there a rubber repair compound anyone's ever used on these things?
Thanks for any help!
Allen
Since there a supposed to be no gas in that area I guess you could try some rubber cement type fix to join the 2 sides of the tare and give it a coat over the repairs to reinforce it a bit. But if it don't hold for for long or if it restricts the ability of the diaphragm then you have to do it all over again. I don't know anyone who has tried it,Just food for thought.
Here are 2 quick videos I did for Jeff AKA @Blueflame. I used those same diaphragms on my bike. This may give you a little in site to how easy it is to do.
My 86 1100 one of the previous owners tried a bicycle tube type repair to the diaphragm. It closed the hole but the it causes the piston to stick and not move smoothly due to the rubber not bending easily at the repair area. which in turn makes that cylinder run like crap. Replacement of the diaphragm is really the only option.
I used JBM replacements for my 83 vt750 and they work fantastic. really a big difference in performance and mine didn't have tears. Fast and easy to replace.
